Back Story

Born in the Shadowfell, Callaro lived a life not unlike other Shadar-Kai. Bound to the service of the Raven Queen, life meant to serve. But one day, when a smugglers ship accidentally made its way into the Shadowfell, it would seem that the Raven Queen had other plans for him. It was on that fateful day that he met his mentor, a dwarven smuggler by the name of Shmernoff. She was an experienced smuggler who lived everyday to its fullest. So full of life and joy and prone to fits of laughter, she at first was a complete anomaly to Callaro. So used to a grim, gray life devoid of emotion, he couldn’t help but accept her offer to take him out of the Shadowfell and teach him the ropes of smuggling on the high sea.

Over the ensuing years he learned not only the craft of his adopted trade but also how to lighten up. At least a little bit. The first time he ever laughed out loud was during a smuggling run involving stolen dwarven whisky. Shmernoff and him were pulling the body of a dead whale loaded with the stolen whisky behind a fishing boat. Everything was going to plan until they made the rendezvous with the buyers and had completed the transaction. Just as they were departing the corpse suddenly exploded and sent whale meat and whisky bottles for half a mile. They both laughed until they cried as they made their getaway.

A few years ago, Callaro had made a name for himself by stealing a gem from a noble in Neverwinter. While not abundantly valuable, it was his first big score and he couldn’t even bring himself to fence it, instead hanging on to it for the memory. Of course, Shmernoff thought he was being ridiculous but other than some good natured ribbing, she let it go.

About a year ago, another smuggler double crossed them in a deal and took the gem. Shmernoff was willing to let the situation go, at least for the moment. She always said, “revenge is a fish best served cold”, but Callaro wasn’t having any of it. They parted ways amicably and he has been in search of the smuggler who wronged him, wrong the smugglers code, since then. He hopes to someday link back up with his partner in crime, once his task is complete.
